Who Is Paul Rand?

Paul Rand was a graphic designer in the United States of America that was very well known.  He attended three different school and activities for graphic design including the Pratt Institute, the Parsons School of Design, and the Art Students League.  Paul Rand happens to be one of the originators of the Swiss Style of graphic design.  He had an exceptionally long career because he had achieved recognition so young and stayed strong through his career.  Many of his logos for big companies are still in use today though he created them so long ago.

Paul Rand was a freelance graphic designer since 1955, and was a design consultant to major companies such as Cummis Engine Company, NeXT, IBM, and Westinghouse.  He not only did freelance design work, he also taught as a professor at Yale University, New Haven in 1956, as well as lectured at the Cooper Union, Pratt Institute.

Before attending school, he used to paint signs for his father’s grocery store, and also for school events.  His father did not believe that art would ever make Paul any money.  Though he attended schools for graphic design, Paul Rand was a “self-taught” designer, through European magazines.
